The Wakeful Swan



You may need to click this picture to enlarge it.   I was walking along the river at night last week. It was late twilight, the sky was a strange, deep red and the rain was falling all around.   The swan could just be seen in the darkness. She was still awake, still searching for food, but I don't think she saw me because she didn't take any notice of me.

    Dear Jenny, great photo. I am glad to have found your blog after I read your comment on my latest post. Many thanks. You live in the city that has been a myth for me for many years, since the early 70's. I worked in a hotel in London to improve my terrible English in 1975. I arrived by train from Venice, it took me almost two days. It was a time I remember with nostalgia, I was wearing ( now il would be unthinkable ) clogs all day long. Had dinner in a ke-bab place near a pub in Angel where they played rock music, I was there almost every night, arriving even by bicycle once...In a place near Victoria Station I went to a Peter Hammil's memorable concert...
    In Portobello I bought a blue shirt without collar, soft soft fabric, that reached my knees.... I wore it for ages.

    In August at last I will visit the Globe Theatre.

    No, no relation. Thanks so much for looking for my book. It is published in the US by Saint Martins Press, and it's now out in paperback. I'd guess Barnes and Noble would have it .:)
