Attention, Cats!

Remember to dip your headlights, and don't dazzle!

Couldn't resist this one! Thanks to @raubrey

While we are on the subject of cats, here's Henri, the existentialist cat. I have never been quite sure what an existentialist is, but Henri is certainly full of anomie, and if he could read I am sure he would read Jean-Paul Sartre. I bet he spends his time agonising about philosophical matters while lapping up a saucer of cheap wine.

Although the film is in French, I think it's a parody of a French genre by a foreigner (maybe a French person can identify the narrator's accent?)

And by the way I was tickled that on my last trip to Italy I bought my mum exactly that "Attenti ai Gatto" wall tile and she has it in her kitchen!

Not much travelling going on around here right now; it's all about weddings. K and F are choosing a wedding cake. It should be an eye opener since they're getting it from"Choccy Woccy Doo Dah" who do um, well, guess you'd call them post-modern, or super-baroque, or psychedelic cakes. Over-the-top, anyhow. She's said for years that if she ever gets married she wants one of their cakes! Here's one of the psychedelic ones, entitled "All You Need Is Love."

Meanwhile I have just noticed we're up to 297 followers - wonder who will be the 300th.

PS I have just read Meike's blog with a giveaway of her talented mum's hand knitted socks.
I am a total sucker for hand knitted proper wool socks so I'm taking the chance of an extra entry for linking. Even if I don't win, you should check out the blog, it's always interesting. So, here goes !

  5. cat headlights!!

My son in law made their wedding cake...chocolate, with white chocolate ganache and white chocolate malteser decorations!! Why stick with heavy fruitcake and toothbreaking white icing?!
Sounds like they are enjoying the organizing!!

  6. You know how I love cats and these are wonderful examples.

What an unusual but pretty wedding cake.

  7. OMG !
I died watching the video. You can just see that is what he was thinking.
Love the part where he is contemplating the tile and looks slowly over his shoulder... "not that they ever do"
    Perfect !
Adore and want the cake !
    Thanks for the giggle !

    cheers, parsnip

  8. Hello Jenny:
Oh, the short film was brilliant! As you say, quite the dramatic cat and, surely, Wittgenstein if not Sartre would have been able to write a thesis on the catty behaviour!!

  9. I enjoyed the You Tube video . . . I look forward to cake pictures from the wedding. Delightful!

  10. Love the drama of a cat's life. Hum, wonder what my dogs would say...

  11. Congratulations in advance on your three hundred followers. Obviously, you have the ability to reach into the hearts of many people.

  12. Oh, yeah, sure, it's hard being a cat. Lying around all day dreaming of mice. Not having to catch the 8.22 to Waterloo. Listing your favourite dozing spots from 1 to 10. Quit complaining about your existential agonies, buddy, we're not fooled.

  13. I love ze cat who accepts ze door may not always open. That is the mystique of cats. The headlights are great, too.

  14. Cats are philosophers at heart. Even the kittens look at me with quite thoughtful expressions at times.

    Love the cake!

  15. I must be one of the morons this cat was talking about because (a) I was clutching my sides laughing while watching the video, and (b) I PRETEND to understand Sartre and Camus. Interestingly, I've been coming across those two philosophers recently in my readings. Have you read "Sense of an Ending" by Julian Barnes (it won the Man Booker Prize)? Some references there. Then I encountered them again in a New Yorker article outlining the friendship & enmity between them, including how good looking Camus was vs. Sartre -- with Sartre whining about having to woo so much harder than Camus to make up for his face!

Your daughter's cake is going to be such a conversation piece. So what will it be for her: post-modern, baroque, wacky? We hope you'll share a photo of it (if she doesn't mind) after the wedding!

  21. Funnily enough, I have tried to figure out the narrator's accent while watching the film, too, but I have not come to any conclusion. It was a fun start into the day for me, and I love the headlights :-)

Ummm... somehow, that cake does not look edible...

  22. I love that film about Henri! It;'s very funny especially the last bit - poor Henri:) That cake is quite something - old-fashioned me prefers a traditional wedding cake but I'll bet my daughter would love something from Choccy Woccy Doo Dah.

  29. That is a cake and half and no mistake! Looking forward to seeing a picture of K and F's.

If it's any consolation I studied the Existentialists as part of my degree and I still didn't understanbd what they were about!! I doubt they did.

  30. What a clever cat. I like brooding animals. :) I can especially relate to becomin irate when stepping on the scale. I wish I felt nothing at the numbers that laugh in my face. :) Nice post. Fun blog.

  33. Hi, Jenny
The headlights and Henri made me laugh so much. The cake is really something. If I have a second chance of marriage, I will fly to buy this cake.
While reading this, I thought what blogs are. And I thought I do not know what blogs are. I feel I have been confined to one place like Henri.

Congratulations! Already 301st! Thanks a lot for inspiring and have a great weekend.

  34. You have 301 at the time I'm typing this comment. Congrats.

Btw, the cake is simply awesome looking.

  35. Love the headlight warning

  36. I thought all dogs were existentialists. Dogs however, have no need for dogma of any kind.

    ReplyDelete
  37. All cats are existentialists, I reckon. My two are certainly living an otherworldly life, that's for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You are a popular girl! I shouldn't be jealous but I am a bit. Forgive me?

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's taken me until now to be able to watch the video. I gave up on the link which kept failing and went straight to YouTube which worked. Unfathomable 'cos same URL at the end. I read some Nietzsche at Uni too and he was supposed to be an Existentialist. I came to the conclusion that he was probably an unbalanced, misogynistic women hater but that was on my more generous days. He probably wouldn't have had a very high regard for me either. As to what an Existentialist is in practice I still have absolutely no idea. Anyway whatever it is the film was brilliantly funny.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I always love reading comments! I'm sorry the link didn't work, GB these things are a total mystery - it works fine from here. Years ago I read Sartre's Childhood ("I loathe my childhood..." etc ) and was extremely glad I hadn't known him either as a child or an adult. (Hm, must re-read, I think it's still there on the bookshelf.)

SonyaAnn, some readers of this blog have well over 1000 well deserved followers, so you should feel jealous of them! :) But it is always fun to reach a round number, I don't know why, mind you!

Iain, and Alan, have to say I have no objection to existentialism, (indeed, I sometimes think animals have the right idea) it's the gloom that gets me. I suppose that's why the film made me laugh, perversely. Oh humour is a strange thing!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh, that's funny. I managed to post this before I'd replied to other comments... all of them appreciated. John, i think you have hit the nail on the head. Ah well I suppose they were young at the time.

Jenny, I find that philosophy generally passes me by - I must lack a gene for it (and a gene for maths. And obviously a gene for genetics while I'm at it, lol.)

Thank you Lina, and Debs. I think I have followed suit but had better check.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I had to read Sartre for A Level French and have to say I didn't really understand him. I read him later and found his view of the world sooooo depressing (and didn't agree with it either).

The kitty is fab, by the way (but then I love cats) I have never thought of Bluebell (our cat) as existential, but will give it some thought now.

    ReplyDelete
  43. An existential cat does not surprise me in the least. They just have that look about them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. the first photos made me laugh. :) and i love your beautiful header photo. :)

  45. Now that is an awesome cake!!! :-D
