Winning Holidays and Travel

One way to travel to places you'd never normally go to is to win a trip. K. first got to Disney World by winning a contest in Harrods. I had a fantastic stay in Greece which I won in a writing competition. This great little film (click the link below) is the competition winner for F and his mates - it was run by Sony and the whole team got a one week unbelievable sounding all expenses paid trip to South Africa. I love it but strangely my favourite bits are probably the out-takes at the end because they capture the laid back feeling that the South Bank has in summer. Mussoorie, India

I've been so bound up with work on my book about Lewis Carroll (which is nothing to do with travel writing - but check it out for my trip to Oxford - that it's been a while since I've had a really interesting travel idea.

Now, I've thought about going to Mussoorie, India. I was brought up on tales about this place, about an era which has now vanished from living memory, and I'd like to see it for myself. I'm told it is now full of modern buildings, and I suppose the places I heard about have all changed, are either just patches of bare earth or internet cafes. Although Woodstock School, which my relatives attended, is still there, and flourishing.

It could never be as romantic as I imagine it, because at present it is a dream world that never existed outside my mind, peopled by my beloved and long lost relatives. I don't want to approach it with the feeling that it will be a disappointment, though.

The answer is to find an angle, a way of viewing Mussoorie which is unusual, interesting, and still has links with the dream which has been lingering on the edges of my mind, for the whole of my life

Liberty of London, Okay I was wrong...

Re my comments on Liberty of London I noticed the other day that their profits are up after their revamp. Which must go to show that I am not the type of customer they are aiming for.

Honestly! How insulting - I usually buy something in their sale, after all (if it is reduced enough)

Who's sorry for the Airlines?

I read Michael Howarth's interesting piece in which he says he is not sorry for the airlines.

Personally I think picking the right cabin staff is one of the most important things. A couple of years ago I went on a national carrier that ran the most awful rattly old planes to the Middle East, I was wondering if we'd fall in the sea to be honest, but the whole trip was made a pleasure by the charming cabin crew who played with the children on board and treated passengers with hospitality. ("Hospitality" - now isn't that an interesting word....)
