Dogs and Cake Don't Mix

Thanks so much for all the comments - I love getting them, and I''ll be replying to them soon and also going round all the blogs I've missed over the last week away.

Meanwhile, I'd like to share another insect cake.  This one is a ladybird (I think they're called ladybugs in the US). I admired it in a garden produce, craft and dog show in deepest Gloucestershire a couple of weeks ago.  The judge wrote an encouraging and nice comment on every entry to the show, and has awarded this ladybird second prize.  But - do you detect a slight problem with this cake?  The judge's comment card explains.  It reads: "Very well iced. Sorry about the mess. A dog ate it!"

Here's another picture from the show. These two dogs were waiting for their owner to emerge from the village church, which dates back about 800 years or so and contained a lovely display of flowers from peoples' gardens.    They looked so bored and fed up, I couldn't help thinking that a nice piece of cake might cheer them up...

  1. Dogs have no off switch with cakes.
One of mine was once, foolishly, left in a car with an entire birthday cake.

You lives, you learns, then you sigh and clean up the mess he leaves under the bed later....

  2. My cat ate a cake I'd made for the hospital fete once! That ladybird looks splendid though despite being chewed. I hope those poor dogs were rewarded for waiting :-)

  3. My daughter was presented by co-workers/co-teachers with an adorable Mickey Mouse cake. She took home the leftover cake, put in on a table out of reach to her two very small (Shih Tzu) dogs, and went to dinner with her boyfriend. When she came home, the cake was mostly gone, and one of the dogs was almost running on the walls with the sugar overload! Never sure how the dog(s) got onto the table!

Where there is a cake and a dog, there will be found a way!!

  4. Oh yes, let them eat cake! The judge's comment did make me laugh. Harvey wasn't guilty. To my knowledge he hasn't been to Gloucestershire this past fortnight.

  7. That would be my Watson, he loves carbs and sweets. But he would sit there looking very sad and staring at you till you gave him some. He has manners but Hamish doesn't. If he wanted it would try to get it but he doesn't care for carbs and sweets.

    Lovely cake.

    cheers, parsnip

  8. Oh … yes! Those expressions say it all. A piece of the ladybug cake or a walk in a park would probably do them quite nicely. :)

  9. The picture of the dogs is too funny! Too bad about the ladies cake but at least she still took home a prize.

  10. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I've enjoyed browsing back through yours. Regards the ragweed, I'm not sure what you're referring to; but it isn't uncommon for very different things to be given the same name in different locations. Here's a link to an article on ragweed in Britain: http://www.survival-expert.com/Campaign.html.

  11. Hello Jenny:
Yes, let them eat cake indeed. The dogs do look as if they are in need of a little cheer of some kind or another. But, perhaps the freedom to roam is what they are really after?

People are so clever with cake making. We should not know where to start to create a ladybird......or even a plain Victoria Sponge come to that!!

  12. Was he sure a dog ate it? It might have been an army of ravenous ladybirds....

  13. Love your photos! I've never been to a dog event like that, but I can just imagine how interesting it would be!

  14. What a big ladybird!
My dog snifs and finds almost all sweets, cakes and chocolates. Once my small box of chocolate that would be covered with green tea was gone, and a miserable torn box was found at a corner of the room.

  15. Dogs, ladybirds ... what do you expect? Are you sure the judge was telling the truth?

  16. Oh yum... I'd be tempted too! A great little snippet of life at a local show.

  19. The judge's comment is a good laugh. The mess of the cake isn't a part of art?
I didn't know dogs had such weakness for sweets.

  23. Interesting that Ladybirds are so internationally popular. In Russia they are called 'God's Little Cows'. Not sure why!

  24. They deserve a large slice of cake after waiting patiently in boredom for so long.

  25. Such a bad dog to eat that prize-winning cake! Precisely the type of thing my dogs would do!! Our dogs were in quarantine near Gloucester.
